Guest Speaker

Students learn that writing a book is not always easy. Authors and illustrators often face obstacles such as finding ideas, revising their work, solving problems, and working with others before a book is ready to be shared. Students discover that creativity, perseverance, and teamwork help turn ideas into books that teach, inspire, and connect people.

    Atlanta Children’s Museum

    Students explore how scientists learn about Earth’s past even though they cannot travel back in time. By studying rocks, soil, and other clues found in nature, scientists have created ways to answer questions about our world. Students learn that asking questions, collecting evidence, and never giving up are important ways people overcome obstacles and make new discoveries.

    Fernbank Science Center – Rocks & Fossils

    Students build on what they learned about Mary Anning, the famous fossil hunter they first met in second grade. They discover how Mary overcame challenges by never giving up on her passion for finding fossils, even when many people doubted her. At Fernbank, students become young paleontologists as they explore fossils and learn how scientists use clues from the past to answer questions about Earth. This field study helps students understand that curiosity, perseverance, and evidence can help people overcome obstacles and make discoveries that help us better understand our world.

    Alpharetta Library

    Students celebrate their learning by sharing their projects with families and the community. They reflect on how people overcome obstacles by asking questions, solving problems, and working together. Students who do not already have a library card will receive one, giving them continued access to books and resources so they can continue learning long after the expedition ends.

    Atlanta Botanical Gardens-Amazing Amphibians

    Could a Poison Dart frog live in Georgia? What about a Gopher frog? Students examine different amphibian adaptations to discover which regions of Georgia are best suited for survival and get to meet live native amphibians.

    • February 9, 2027 (Off-Campus)
    • Cost per student: $17 (Fee covers the cost of the venue plus bus transportation)
      Etowah Indian Mounds

      Students will visit Etowah Indian Mounds to explore the history, culture, and daily lives of the Native American people who lived at the site hundreds of years ago. Through firsthand observation of the archaeological site, artifacts, mounds, and museum exhibits, students will investigate how Native American communities organized their societies, used the natural environment, and developed traditions and technologies. The field study will allow students to connect classroom learning about Georgia’s history and Native American cultures to a real historical site in their state.

      Johns Creek Environmental Campus

      Students will visit the Johns Creek Environmental Campus to explore how communities manage and protect water resources. Through firsthand observation of the water treatment process, students will investigate how humans use science and technology to clean water, conserve resources, and reduce environmental impact. This field study connects to students’ learning about ecosystems, human impact on the environment, and the importance of protecting Earth’s natural resources.
